Benja is a Dutch NGO that has joined forces with a local organisation in Uganda to take care of the street children in this country. They offer the children a listening ear, a hug, a bandage, a full stomach, an opportunity. Benja offers the children a future by providing them with education, a safe shelter and guidance.
Many of the children at Benja have experienced unpleasant things. From family abuse to fighting with other children for a dry place to sleep. Their confidence in people has disappeared, they are often far behind in education and some are addicted. Addicted to drugs, to make money quickly, to street life. Benja offers guidance for this. The children are therefore first supervised before they go to school. A bed and three meals a day is the basis for this.
The children are sponsored by people worldwide. I was commissioned by the project to document the children and the project so that the sponsors can be kept informed via letters, social media and other means. A brief reportage is shared below.
